No matter what the hair trends are, having thick and beautiful hair always makes you look more attractive and feel great about yourself. Hair is literally a part of your whole look. But what happens once your hair becomes frail, thin, or nonexistent? Hair Transplant can make a man in his 40s look like 60 and the same is the case for women.
Actually, it is said that about 50-60% of women experience hair loss problems in their day-to-day lives. No matter what, there is an option for thinning or balding hair. This procedure is called a hair transplant.
What is a Hair Transplant?
A hair transplant is a surgical medical procedure in which you transfer donor follicles of your hair (that are located in a fuller region of the hair) to fill the area affected by hair thinning or balding. It is a process of taking the donor hair and grafting it onto the targeted part of your head. This technique is not uncommon and has been performed by surgeons in the US since the 1950s.
What Actually Happens?
There are two common types of procedures for hair implants (follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction( FUE)). FUT requires a scalpel to cut a strip of skin from the back of the head; and the FUE, which requires the surgeon making tiny holes to fill in with hair. With FUT, your surgeon can place thousands of strands of hair.
After you are done with the process of pruning and grafting, it takes some weeks for the skin to get back to its usual look. At the start, you’ll experience that your hair loss isn’t noticeably gone so don’t expect immediate results from either technique.Â
After recuperating time and after three to four months post-procedure, when the transplanted hair has fallen out and new natural hair has taken its place, you start to see the results more clearly. This new hair will continue to grow naturally.
What to Expect After a Hair Transplant?
Your scalp will be tender for the first few days to weeks after the surgery. You could also be asked to wear a bandage on the head for a short duration of time. You would be provided some proper medication to help you with the pain.
If you’re looking to return to work, it may be possible after 2-5 days of the operation. The exact amount depends on how your head reacts to the treatment.
However, it is not wise to expect revolutionary changes in your hair after a single process. The result of the surgery depends on various external factors. These factors are:
- Age
- Condition of the scalp
- Hair thickness
- Hair color
- Texture of the scalp
- Technique of the treatment
- Size of transplant area
- Hair type
Is Hair Transplant Permanent?
The first question that pops while you go through the process is: Is hair transplant permanent? The answer to this is Yes and No. Your natural hair has a lifetime, after which they are useless and do not produce new hair.
Similarly, these newly transplanted hairs also have a lifetime which is usually less than the one of the natural hairs. This means that your head will stop responding to the growth of new hairs as soon as the lifetime of what your natural hair would be.
Even though a hair transplant is not truly permanent, it helps you to regain your hair naturally and give it the fullness you are looking for. The results do last for a couple of years.
You can’t always expect a head full of hair after a single session of hair transplant. Sometimes, this practice can take multiple sessions and treatments to get back to its full strength. That is why it is more convenient to consult an experienced surgeon who may be able to tell the condition of your scalp and suggest the appropriate plan that works for you.
